Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the severe earthquakes that hit Venezuela, offering condolences and support from India. The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.1 and 7.5, struck near Caracas, causing significant tremors. PM Modi extended heartfelt sympathies to the Venezuelan government and people, especially to those who lost loved ones, and pledged assistance and solidarity during this challenging period.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquakes were shallow, with a depth of 10 km, potentially increasing their destructive impact. Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a State of Emergency nationwide following the earthquakes, urging citizens to stay safe and calm. The Maiquetia airport was closed due to damages, with security, medical, and rescue teams mobilized for relief efforts across the country.
Venezuela’s Interior, Justice, and Peace Minister Diosdado Cabello noted widespread damage in various cities, particularly in Caracas where buildings collapsed. Cabello advised people to avoid staying indoors due to aftershock risks and called for unity and composure during the recovery process. The earthquakes also affected neighboring Colombia, with reports of strong tremors felt in several cities, as experts warn of potential high casualties and extensive destruction.
