Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi engaged in comprehensive discussions on various aspects of India-Japan relations, covering trade, investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defense, and people-to-people exchanges. The Ministry of External Affairs reported that the leaders also shared perspectives on regional and global developments of mutual concern.
Concrete progress was achieved during the talks, with the adoption of three significant documents: a Joint Declaration on Economic Security, a Joint Statement on Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence, and a Joint Statement on Energy Resilience. Both leaders oversaw the signing of crucial Memorandums of Understanding and agreements related to economic security, clean energy, critical technologies, and research and development. Additionally, plans were made for commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations establishment.
The 16th India-Japan Annual Summit witnessed discussions aimed at advancing ties and reinforcing bonds between the two nations. Prime Minister Takaichi’s official visit to India marked her first after assuming office, following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. This visit underscores the shared commitment of India and Japan to further strengthen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
During a joint press briefing, PM Modi revealed the signing of an agreement on the first co-development project in the defense sector between India and Japan. He highlighted the potential of combining Japan’s precision technology with India’s software capabilities to drive global AI development. Emphasizing the importance of mutual trust in the India-Japan partnership, PM Modi stressed the shared commitment to a free, prosperous, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, launching initiatives for stability and prosperity in the area.
