Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha in Assam. Modi praised Purkayastha’s commitment to public service and his role in Assam’s political landscape. Purkayastha, aged 95, passed away at Silchar Medical College and Hospital after battling a prolonged illness.
Leaders from various political backgrounds paid tribute to Purkayastha for his contributions to the growth of the BJP in Assam and the Northeast. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the irreplaceable void left by Purkayastha’s demise. Sarma highlighted the invaluable guidance and mentorship he received from the late leader over the years.
Kabindra Purkayastha, a stalwart of the BJP in Assam, began his political journey with the RSS in 1951. He played a pivotal role in expanding the RSS ideology in the Northeast, particularly in Assam and the Barak Valley. As one of the founding members of the BJP in 1980, Purkayastha significantly contributed to the party’s organizational growth in the state.
Purkayastha, known for his advocacy of regional issues, represented the Silchar constituency in the Lok Sabha in 1991 and 1998. Despite a defeat in the 2014 elections, he remained a respected figure for his dedication to public service. In 2024, he was honored with an honorary doctorate for his lifelong commitment to social welfare and public life.
