Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia has resulted in significant advancements, particularly in the defense and security sectors. Both countries are looking to enhance their collaboration as they seek to bolster their positions amid concerns over reliance on the US to counter China. During the visit, PM Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese engaged in the third Australia-India Annual Summit, where they assessed progress across various areas of cooperation, such as trade, defense, education, and regional security.
The summit marked the finalization of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering defense, maritime security, energy, education, and critical technology, among others. A Joint Declaration on Defense, a key outcome of PM Modi’s visit, emphasizes the importance of enhancing interoperability and information sharing between the defense forces of both nations. It also underscores the commitment to regional security and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.
Notably, the declaration includes provisions for consultations on defense-related developments in the Indo-Pacific region that impact shared interests, a significant step reflecting a closer strategic alignment between Australia and India. The visit also saw progress in the civil nuclear energy sector, with Australia agreeing to sell uranium to India, marking a shift in its export policy. Despite these advancements, there remains a need for greater joint efforts among Indo-Pacific partners to address challenges posed by China’s assertive behavior, particularly in trade relations.
