In a significant development, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has dismantled a cross-border narcotics smuggling network by apprehending two individuals and seizing 30 kg of heroin, as confirmed by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav. The arrested suspects are Gurpreet Singh, also known as Gopi, from Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar in Amritsar, and Gagandeep Singh from Bhalla Colony in Amritsar. Additionally, the police have confiscated the motorcycle used for transporting the illicit substances.
This marks the third major narcotics smuggling operation disrupted by CI Amritsar since July 6, bringing the total heroin seizure to 68 kg within a span of 10 days. Earlier incidents on July 6 and July 7 led to the arrest of six individuals and the recovery of 13 kg and 25 kg of heroin, respectively. DGP Yadav disclosed that initial investigations suggest the arrested individuals were acting under the instructions of an overseas handler associated with cross-border smugglers. They were responsible for collecting heroin from various sources and distributing it to recipients across the state.
According to DGP Yadav, intelligence received by the Counter Intelligence Amritsar indicated that Gurpreet Singh and Gagandeep Singh had recently obtained a substantial heroin consignment and were en route to deliver it near the Gaunsabad area in Kambo, Amritsar. Responding promptly, police teams set up checkpoints and intercepted the suspects on their motorcycle near Gaunsabad, leading to the recovery of 30 kg of heroin from their possession.
