A recent mention of Kalari cheese, a traditional delicacy of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has led to a surge in its popularity and sales. Describing cheese as part of India’s cultural heritage, PM Modi highlighted its global recognition at an international cheese competition in Brazil. Following this special mention, also known as the “Mozzarella of Kashmir,” Kalari cheese has seen a significant increase in demand.
Local cheese makers and retailers have reported a notable spike in sales of Kalari cheese in the past few weeks. Povinder Sharma, a Kalari cheese maker, mentioned a newfound interest and demand for the cheese among all age groups. He noted that since PM Modi’s mention, sales have soared, with batches selling out instantly and no unsold stock remaining.
Gurbaksh Singh, a dairy business owner in Udhampur, explained the growing popularity of Kalari cheese, attributing it to the increased demand that has even led to the opening of new shops and created employment opportunities. Meanwhile, Angrez Singh, who owns a dhaba along the highway, emphasized that Kalari has become an iconic representation of Jammu and Kashmir’s identity, attracting tourists who stopover to relish its taste.
Tourists like Narendra Singh have expressed their fondness for Kalari cheese, considering it a matter of pride for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially for the Dogra culture, as it gains international recognition. The traditional art of making Kalari cheese remains a significant occupation in Udhampur and surrounding villages, carried forward by families through generations, now making its mark both domestically and globally.
