PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss has called for the immediate establishment of new government medical colleges in six districts of Tamil Nadu. This appeal follows the National Medical Commission’s decision to revoke restrictive regulations that had impeded the growth of medical education in the state. Ramadoss highlighted the opportunity to set up government medical colleges in Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, and Tenkasi, emphasizing the need to enhance access to medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
The earlier regulation, which was withdrawn by the NMC on April 27, 2026, had imposed a limit of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population. This restriction would have restricted Tamil Nadu to only 7,731 MBBS seats, despite already having 12,650 seats in government and private colleges. Ramadoss, who had opposed this rule and sought its withdrawal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, welcomed the decision to scrap the controversial norms, which he believes will rejuvenate plans to expand medical education in Tamil Nadu and other southern states.
Ramadoss reiterated PMK’s objective of establishing at least one government medical college in every district. He commended the previous AIADMK government for initiating 13 new government medical colleges, a record achievement. However, he criticized the current DMK government for not opening any new government medical colleges during its tenure. With the regulatory obstacles removed, Ramadoss urged the state to focus on enhancing medical infrastructure and pledged the PMK’s support for prompt action under a welfare-oriented administration.
