In a unique effort to reduce crime and support individuals with criminal backgrounds in reintegrating into society, the police in Dhanbad, Jharkhand organized a parade involving approximately 700 such individuals. This initiative, a first at the district level in Jharkhand, aimed to encourage these individuals to refrain from unlawful activities. People with criminal records from various police station areas were assembled at the police lines for identity verification, photography, and record verification.
Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar, City SP Ritwik Srivastava, and Rural SP S. Mohammad Yaqub, while addressing the gathering, emphasized that the purpose of the initiative was not to shame anyone but to offer a chance for reform and rehabilitation. They highlighted that individuals with criminal histories were being given an opportunity to reintegrate into society and lead normal lives, with police assistance available if they chose to abandon criminal behavior.
The police disclosed that over 3,000 individuals with criminal backgrounds were on record in the district, with 700 individuals participating in the initial phase of the parade. The rest would be summoned gradually. Those who have maintained a clean record for an extended period were encouraged to approach the relevant police station in charge for conduct verification, potentially leading to their removal from the list based on inquiry and compliance with regulations.
Emphasizing continued monitoring of identified individuals, Prabhat Kumar warned of severe legal repercussions for those found re-engaging in criminal activities. He highlighted the negative impact of a criminal record on processes like character certificates, passport applications, and government employment. Police officials also urged attendees to report criminal activities in their communities, underscoring the campaign’s dual focus on crime prevention and reform-oriented policing.
