The recent clash between Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and KSU state president Aloysius Xavier appears to stem from the controversy surrounding Government Pleaders’ appointments. However, insiders in the Congress suggest that this dispute goes beyond legal matters and is rooted in long-standing factional politics within the party.
Over the years, factional rivalries within the Kerala Congress, from K. Karunakaran versus A.K. Antony to Oommen Chandy versus Ramesh Chennithala, have significantly influenced the party’s internal dynamics.
The current rift is being viewed in the context of the ongoing political rivalry between Chief Minister Satheesan and AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, whose supporters hold considerable sway within the organization.
Satheesan’s rise to Chief Minister after outmaneuvering Venugopal in the UDF’s leadership race has intensified the perception that every major disagreement within the party is linked to this larger political power struggle.
The recent dispute was triggered by KSU’s public criticism of the government’s choice of Government Pleaders. Aloysius Xavier accused the Chief Minister of neglecting him at an event, leading to complaints to the KPCC leadership about KSU’s grievances being sidelined by the government.
While supporters of Satheesan claim that the controversy was manufactured by certain factions within the party, KSU-aligned leaders argue that their concerns were repeatedly ignored before they spoke out.
The rift widened when KSU Ernakulam district president K.M. Krishnalal sided with the Chief Minister, dismissing the controversy as a deliberate ploy and questioning the sudden objections to appointments of lawyers long associated with the Congress ideology.
The lack of a cohesive KPCC leadership and effective coordination between the party and the government has exacerbated the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
Even routine organizational matters are now spilling into the public domain, providing the Opposition with political leverage.
The timing of this episode is particularly delicate, coinciding with the third death anniversary of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, known for managing rival factions within the party.
As Congress leaders gather to honor Chandy’s memory, the escalating standoff between Satheesan and KSU is expected to take center stage in political discussions, highlighting the ongoing challenge of balancing internal dynamics within the party alongside governing the state.
