A political controversy has arisen in Kerala as BJP leaders P.C. George and his son Shaun George criticized sections of the Catholic Church for alleged political bias. P.C. George, who ran for the BJP in the Poonjar constituency, accused certain religious figures of supporting the Congress-led UDF. He claimed that there were calls from Church institutions to vote for the UDF in the Assembly elections.
Shaun George joined the critique, slamming Christian leaders for their anti-BJP stance. He questioned the benefits the Church gained from leaders like AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Rajya Sabha member Jose K. Mani. Shaun George warned that if the Church distances itself from the BJP, they would reciprocate.
The duo also raised concerns about foreign funding, emphasizing the need for all institutions to adhere strictly to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and disclose foreign funds received. P.C. George, a veteran legislator with a history in the Kerala Congress, merged his party with the BJP in 2024. The ongoing political battle in the Pala constituency is closely watched for factors like Church-backed voters and anti-incumbency sentiments.
