Pravesh Wahi, a BJP councillor from Rohini E ward, has been elected as the new Mayor of Delhi with a significant win. The BJP’s majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi made his victory widely expected. In the mayoral election, Wahi secured 156 votes out of a total of 165, defeating Congress candidate Mohammad Zarif who received only nine votes.
Alongside the mayoral election, Monika Pant, a councillor from Anand Vihar, was chosen as the new Deputy Mayor. Wahi, who currently represents Ward 53-E in Rohini, had a strong win in the 2022 municipal elections. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University’s Shivaji College and serves as the Leader of the House in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Starting his political career with the BJP Yuva Morcha in 2002, Wahi has held various organizational roles before entering electoral politics. He was first elected as a councillor in 2007 from Rohini and later from Naharpur, serving a second term from 2012 to 2017. Wahi has also held key positions like chairman of the Rohini zonal committee and chairman of the standing committee in the North Corporation.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other Delhi government ministers for his nomination, Wahi emphasized the importance of improving sanitation services with government support. The financial challenges of the MCD were highlighted as less concerning, with a focus on enhancing sanitation services with the aid of government funds.
