President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed warm wishes to the people of Sikkim on Statehood Day. President Murmu praised Sikkim’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and environmental commitment, highlighting it as a model of sustainable development. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged Sikkim’s contribution to India’s progress and wished the state continued prosperity.
Prime Minister Modi also mentioned his recent visit to Sikkim during the 50th Statehood Day celebrations, expressing gratitude for the warm reception. He assured ongoing support from the Central Government for Sikkim’s development trajectory. Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded Sikkim’s achievements in environmental sustainability and tourism, emphasizing its inspiration for the nation.
Sikkim Statehood Day, celebrated annually on May 16, marks the historic integration of Sikkim into the Union of India in 1975, transitioning from a monarchy to India’s 22nd state. Before this integration, Sikkim was a sovereign kingdom governed by the Namgyal dynasty’s Buddhist priest-kings, known as the Chogyals, maintaining a unique status as an Indian protectorate post-Independence.
