A 100-hectare ‘Furniture Park’ and plans for a shipbuilding cluster in Porbandar took center stage at a high-level industry summit. The summit, led by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, aimed to develop Porbandar into a port-linked manufacturing and export hub. The initiative aligns with India’s industrial expansion strategy, focusing on enhancing manufacturing capacity and exports.
Officials have identified a site near Porbandar for the Furniture Park, with 100 hectares of land earmarked for the project. Additionally, a proposal for a shipbuilding cluster near Kuchhdi has been put forward. Mandaviya emphasized that the project supports India’s port-led industrialization framework and the goal of achieving developed nation status by 2047. He highlighted the strategic importance of Porbandar’s coastal location and its potential for significant investment.
The proposed Furniture Park will be an integrated facility housing design and skill development centers under one framework. Mandaviya assured stakeholders of government support at all project stages and emphasized collaboration between central and state authorities. Gujarat’s focus on advanced sectors like semiconductors and space technology, alongside traditional industries, positions the state for growth. Porbandar’s historical maritime significance and existing infrastructure make it an attractive destination for industrial development.
Forest, Environment, and Science & Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia linked the Furniture Park concept to Porbandar’s historical maritime trade legacy. He highlighted the region’s tourism appeal and ecological assets, including its proximity to popular tourist destinations. Porbandar offers cost advantages over other industrial corridors and benefits from renewable energy sources. The region’s connectivity through highways, rail infrastructure, and a port with expanded shipping capabilities further enhances its industrial potential.
Vice-Chairman and CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board, Dr. Ajay Kumar, detailed the technical aspects of the proposed shipbuilding cluster at Kuchhdi. The Industries Commissioner outlined the rationale for selecting Porbandar as the Furniture Park site, citing logistical advantages and coastal access. The development of Porbandar as a furniture manufacturing hub signifies a significant step towards enhancing trade engagement and economic growth in the region.
