The proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam has sparked strong political reactions. The ruling BJP supports it, citing benefits for social security and women’s empowerment. In contrast, opposition parties criticize the move, accusing the government of interference in citizens’ private lives.
Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker, Ranjeet Kumar Das, welcomed the UCC proposal, emphasizing its significance for minority community women. BJP MLA Sushanta Borgohain also endorsed the legislation, highlighting its alignment with Assamese society and its aim to provide social security to vulnerable groups.
However, the Opposition, including Congress MLAs Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Tanzil Hussain, and Wazed Ali Choudhury, raised concerns about the necessity of the UCC. They argue that existing laws address issues like polygamy and underage marriage, questioning the political motives behind the proposed code.
Congress MLA Akhil Gogoi criticized the UCC as an intrusion into personal freedoms and privacy. He expressed concerns about potential state surveillance over people’s private lives, labeling the UCC as a threat to individual privacy rights.
