The proposed unity initiative between the SNDP Yogam and the Nair Service Society (NSS) has officially collapsed. This decision comes after an exchange of contrasting explanations between Vellappally Natesan and Sukumaran Nair, the leaders of the two organizations. Vellappally Natesan, the General Secretary of SNDP Yogam, praised Sukumaran Nair as a dignified leader and clarified that there was no bitterness over NSS’s withdrawal from the unity move.
Nair, in response to Natesan’s statements, refuted claims of external pressure influencing NSS’s decision. He emphasized that the withdrawal was solely based on internal assessments and concerns regarding the unity proposal. Nair also highlighted that the NSS has always maintained a neutral stance towards political parties and any move perceived to compromise that neutrality would not be accepted.
The sequence of events leading to the collapse involved a communication gap between the leaders. Nair pointed out that the involvement of Vellappally’s son, Tushar Vellappally, who holds a political position, raised suspicions about the political implications of the unity discussions. This development has effectively put an end to the SNDP–NSS unity initiative, showcasing the challenges of community-based consolidation in Kerala’s politically charged environment.
