Over 400 individuals participated in a peaceful march in Switzerland, walking from Werdmuhleplatz to the Chinese Consulate General in Zurich. The protest, led by the Tibetan Community of Switzerland and Liechtenstein along with other organizations, aimed to oppose China’s recent “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress.”
During the demonstration, participants urged the global community to denounce the legislation and take tangible steps to safeguard the rights of Tibetans, Uyghurs, and other impacted groups in China. The event featured speeches by various representatives, including Thinlay Chukki and Venerable Khenpo Tenzin Jangchup, highlighting concerns over the law’s implications on cultural and religious identities.
Representatives from different organizations expressed serious apprehensions regarding China’s Ethnic Unity Law, emphasizing its potential threat to the distinct identities of ethnic minorities. Thinlay Chukki, addressing the crowd, emphasized the need for international action to address the situation and called for solidarity with affected communities.
The new law, enforced by Beijing recently, has faced significant backlash globally, with UN experts cautioning against its potential to reinforce assimilation practices and cross-border repression.
