The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is scheduled to meet on Thursday, where Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will introduce an interim Budget ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Rangasamy, who oversees the Finance portfolio, will seek approval for government spending over the next five months through this interim Budget.
Traditionally, Puducherry presents its full Budget in March. However, due to the impending elections and the government’s term ending in April, an interim financial statement is being presented instead of a comprehensive annual Budget. The Assembly session will commence with obituary references followed by the interim Budget presentation by the Chief Minister.
Heated debates are anticipated during the session, with opposition parties like the Congress and the DMK planning to address issues such as corruption allegations and concerns regarding the distribution of counterfeit medicines in the union territory. The current government, a coalition of NR Congress and BJP, led by Rangasamy, came into power after the 2021 Assembly elections and is now approaching the end of its tenure.
