The Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a complaint with the state Election Commission and the Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, requesting a delay in the Mudki Municipal Council elections in Ferozepur district. The complaint cites widespread violence, intimidation, obstruction in filing nomination papers, and alleged misuse of police resources.
According to the BJP’s complaint, opposition candidates, including those from the BJP, faced threats, assaults, and were unlawfully prevented from submitting nomination papers by individuals purportedly linked to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party. On May 16, armed supporters reportedly instigated fear at the nomination center in Mudki, resulting in injuries to multiple candidates and supporters.
The BJP further alleges that local police officials failed to ensure a fair nomination process and remained passive despite the disturbances. An FIR was filed on May 17 after public outcry, naming approximately 300 unidentified individuals in connection with the violence and disruptions near the nomination center.
The party has called for the immediate transfer of officials in Ferozepur, an independent investigation into the incident, enhanced security for candidates, strict actions against the culprits, and a chance for affected candidates to file nominations. Emphasizing the importance of a secure and unbiased electoral process, the BJP insists that democracy cannot thrive amidst fear and violence, urging the Election Commission to postpone the elections in Mudki until normalcy is restored.
