Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann initiated the ‘Soorma’ campaign, honoring individuals who have successfully battled drug addiction with special rings and T-shirts. This campaign marks a significant step in the state’s anti-drug efforts, aiming to empower recovered individuals as “Ambassadors of Hope” to lead the fight against addiction at the grassroots level.
Recognizing those who have maintained sobriety for over two years, the Chief Minister announced that they would serve as inspirational figures for others struggling with addiction and would also be offered employment opportunities by the state government. Emphasizing the role of sports in combating drug abuse, Mann revealed plans to make village sports grounds and gyms operational by July 15, providing avenues for youth to engage positively.
In addition to the focus on sports, Mann highlighted the state’s commitment to quality education, universal healthcare, and rehabilitation services as pillars for a drug-free and prosperous Punjab. He commended the resilience of the youth who have overcome addiction, acknowledging their courage in facing societal stigma and their readiness to contribute positively to society.
Addressing the stigma associated with drug addiction, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of supporting recovered individuals in their journey towards recovery and empowering them to assist others through sharing their experiences. He underscored the government’s efforts to enhance rehabilitation services, including the establishment of modern facilities across Punjab to aid in the recovery process.
Reflecting on the state’s progress in education, Mann noted Punjab’s advancements in providing quality education in government schools, leading to the state’s top ranking in educational standards. He emphasized the transformative power of education in eradicating poverty, highlighting the potential for students to uplift their families and communities through knowledge and skills.
