Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has urged the Union Government to enhance surveillance along the international border to combat cross-border drug smuggling. Singh emphasized that Punjab, due to its border with Pakistan, is a prime target for such activities. While Punjab has taken measures like deploying anti-drone systems, Singh stressed that border security falls under the Central government’s jurisdiction.
Singh highlighted the availability of advanced surveillance technology to intercept drones carrying drugs, provided there is political will. He also emphasized the need for the Centre to crack down on international drug syndicates and criminals operating from prisons outside Punjab. Singh underscored that Punjab is leading the fight against drugs on a national level and requires full cooperation from the Union Government.
The minister emphasized that eradicating drug abuse necessitates not just enforcement but also public involvement, compassion, rehabilitation, and a collective commitment to safeguard the youth. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Bhagwant Mann government to continue the anti-drug mission until Punjab is entirely drug-free. Regarding the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign, launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Singh highlighted its focus on youth protection and securing the state’s future through a comprehensive approach.
Since the campaign’s inception on March 1, 2025, over 52,000 FIRs have been filed under the NDPS Act, resulting in the arrest of more than 73,000 drug peddlers across Punjab, including significant seizures of heroin. Singh commended the government’s efforts in dismantling the drug network, as reflected in these statistics.
