PV Sindhu’s quest for a spot in the 2026 season’s first title match was cut short as she faced a defeat in straight games against reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles semifinals of the Australian Badminton Open. Despite a strong start, Sindhu couldn’t maintain her lead, eventually losing 22-20, 21-12 in 43 minutes to Yamaguchi, who secured a spot in the final of the BWF Super 500 tournament.
This loss marks another close call for Sindhu this season, where she has shown glimpses of promise. The Australian Open was her second semifinal appearance on the BWF World Tour this year, following a similar finish at the Malaysia Open in January.
In a fiercely contested opening game, Sindhu initially held the advantage, only to see Yamaguchi take control with a streak of six consecutive points. Despite a valiant effort from Sindhu to level the game, Yamaguchi maintained her composure to claim the crucial opener.
Yamaguchi’s dominance continued into the second game, where she quickly pulled ahead with seven unanswered points, turning the match in her favor. With this victory, Yamaguchi now boasts a 14-15 record against Sindhu in their 29 career meetings, showcasing her superiority in the rivalry.
India’s campaign in Sydney came to an end with Sindhu’s defeat, as earlier exits in the tournament included the men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan, along with the men’s singles contingent failing to progress past the opening round. Indian shuttlers will now shift their focus to the upcoming Macau Open Super 300 tournament.
