Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and teenager Tanvi Sharma have progressed to the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event at the Australian Badminton Open. Sindhu, ranked 10th in the world, defeated Isharani Baruah 22-20, 21-12 in 42 minutes and will now face Chen Su-yu from Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Tanvi Sharma secured a 21-13, 21-15 victory over Malvika Bansod, advancing to her second quarterfinal of the year where she will meet top seed Akane Yamaguchi from Japan.
Tanvi Sharma’s win sets up a challenging quarter-final clash against three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi. Additionally, Tanya Hemanth’s journey ended with a defeat against Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand. In the men’s doubles event, MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan won 21-17, 21-7 against Michael Owen and Dylan Soedjasa from New Zealand, keeping India’s hopes alive in the competition.
India’s top-ranked doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, did not participate due to Satwik’s shoulder injury. The mixed doubles challenge for India concluded as Dhruv Rawat and Manisha Keer were defeated by Japan’s Akira Koga and Natsu Saito.
