Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is scheduled to visit Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday. He plans to meet with residents of the Bhagirathpura area, where nearly two dozen people lost their lives due to consuming contaminated water recently. The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee confirmed that during his visit, Gandhi will meet the affected families as a gesture of support.
The visit will also include a large protest organized by the Madhya Pradesh Congress in Indore to draw attention to the failures that led to the tragic incident. Various senior party leaders from the state, such as PCC chief Jitu Patwari and State Assembly LoP Umang Singhar, are expected to participate in the protest. Additionally, a statewide protest is set to take place across Madhya Pradesh on January 17, with Congress workers staging sit-ins at Mahatma Gandhi’s statues.
Rahul Gandhi’s impending visit is likely to intensify political tensions in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. The state BJP leadership, led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, has already criticized the Congress, accusing them of politicizing the situation. Chief Minister Yadav emphasized the government’s efforts to address the Bhagirathpura tragedy and urged the Congress to approach the issue constructively rather than for political gain.
Amidst the political exchanges, Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, a local leader from Indore, condemned the Congress for challenging Indore’s status as the cleanest city in India. Vijayvargiya acknowledged the contamination incident as a challenging period but highlighted the BJP’s commitment to Indore’s development. He urged those protesting in Indore to recognize the BJP’s contributions to the city’s progress.
