Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, stirred controversy in Parliament with his ‘magician’ comment directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a debate on the government’s defense of three contentious Bills. The remark led to demands for an apology from the BJP, labeling it as a mockery of the Parliament and the nation.
The debate witnessed heated exchanges as Rahul Gandhi drew from his childhood experiences, highlighting his fears and moments of truth, along with anecdotes about his grandmother, former PM Indira Gandhi. He recounted a childhood memory of a magician’s failed trick symbolizing an abrupt end.
Amidst the uproar, Rahul Gandhi suggested that the BJP was aware the Bill would not pass, emphasizing the PM’s intentions to reshape India’s electoral landscape and portray himself as pro-women. His repeated references to a magician triggered strong reactions, leading to calls for expunging his remarks from the House records.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly objected to Rahul Gandhi’s comments, particularly his reference to Operation Sindoor as “magic,” which he deemed disrespectful to the Armed Forces and the nation. Speaker Om Birla intervened, expunging the contentious remarks and advising Rahul Gandhi to maintain parliamentary decorum.
Rahul Gandhi, complying with the Speaker’s counsel on the magician analogy, continued his critique of the Union government, pointing out what he termed as a “central confusion” within the BJP and urging them to desist from using the armed forces as shields.
