Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will launch a direct 20-coach Vande Bharat train service between Jammu and Srinagar. This service aims to boost tourism and improve connectivity between the two capitals of Jammu and Kashmir. The regular public services will begin on May 2, following the inaugural event.
The historic rail link between Katra town in Jammu division and Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025. This project, which cost Rs 28,000 crore, has been a significant engineering feat due to the challenging Himalayan terrain. The new Vande Bharat train will cover a distance of 267 kilometers and operate six days a week between Jammu and Srinagar.
The Vande Bharat Express is equipped with modern amenities, including the ‘Kavach’ safety system and a GPS-based passenger information system. This train service is expected to not only reduce travel time but also provide a substantial boost to the local economy and tourism. The introduction of a 20-coach train will accommodate more passengers on the Katra-Srinagar route, enhancing travel convenience.
