The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee has decided not to take part in the state government’s public consultations on the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC). They argue that without the draft legislation being made public for discussion and feedback, meaningful public consultation is not feasible. The party, led by Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra, expressed concerns over the lack of transparency in the consultation process.
In a formal letter to the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, the Congress highlighted that the government had called for consultations with political parties without sharing any draft of the proposed UCC. Dotasra emphasized the importance of releasing the draft to allow citizens and stakeholders to understand the provisions and provide informed feedback. He warned that proceeding with consultations without transparency could lead to unnecessary controversies and harm social harmony in Rajasthan.
The Congress raised apprehensions about potential divisions among religious communities, castes, and tribal groups if discussions on the UCC were held without proper preparation. Dotasra stressed that the party cannot support a process that might disrupt the state’s social fabric. Moreover, he criticized the government for diverting attention from critical governance issues like healthcare, unemployment, education, and law and order by initiating consultations on an unprepared law.
Despite the government’s scheduled UCC consultation meetings on July 6 and 7, the Congress has announced its boycott of the events. They maintain that any constructive dialogue should commence only after the draft legislation is publicly available for scrutiny.
