The Rajasthan Police Cyber Crime Branch has alerted the public to the increasing risks of cyber fraud involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology. Cybercriminals are exploiting AI tools like Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT to circumvent Aadhaar biometric security measures for illicit financial and digital activities. V.K. Singh, Additional Director General of Police (Cyber Crime), highlighted that fraudsters employ phishing and social engineering to obtain victims’ Aadhaar details and then manipulate mobile numbers using Common Service Centres or Update Client Lite kits.
The criminals’ modus operandi involves changing the registered mobile number linked to Aadhaar, rerouting One Time Passwords (OTPs) to their devices, granting unauthorized access to digital accounts. The advisory emphasized the use of AI-driven deepfake technology to generate realistic fake videos mimicking individuals’ facial expressions and eye movements. These fabricated visuals can trick facial recognition systems, facilitating unauthorized access to services like DigiLocker and e-KYC platforms for fraudulent transactions.
To safeguard against such threats, Rajasthan Police urged citizens to secure their Aadhaar biometrics promptly through the mAadhaar app or the official UIDAI website. Locking biometric data prevents its misuse without the Aadhaar holder’s consent. It is also recommended to monitor Aadhaar authentication history on the UIDAI portal regularly to track recent usage. Additionally, individuals are advised not to overlook SMS alerts regarding changes in the linked mobile number and to maintain an active email ID for immediate notifications on Aadhaar updates.
In the event of cyber fraud incidents or attempted fraud, citizens are encouraged to report promptly to the nearest police station, Cyber Police Station, or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Complaints can also be lodged through the Cyber Helpline number 1930.
