In a significant move after the Tamil Nadu Assembly election outcomes, Rajinikanth visited DMK President M.K. Stalin at his residence in Alwarpet, Chennai. Sources reveal that Rajinikanth expressed support for Stalin following DMK’s unsatisfactory performance in the polls and assured him of continued backing during challenging political times. The meeting, seen as a crucial display of personal and political solidarity, lasted for a considerable duration.
The DMK, under Stalin’s leadership, faced a setback in the elections, securing only 59 seats in the 234-member Assembly. This loss of power came amidst a campaign marked by anti-incumbency sentiments and the emergence of actor-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). While Rajinikanth met Stalin, other senior leaders from the DMK-led alliance, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties, extended their support to the party leadership at the DMK headquarters.
The focus of these meetings was on upholding opposition unity and strategizing for the evolving political landscape in the state. As Tamil Nadu politics witnesses rapid changes with TVK becoming the largest party with 108 seats but falling short of a majority, discussions are ongoing. The Congress, with five seats, has conditionally backed Vijay for government formation, and TVK is seeking support from CPI, CPI(M), and VCK.
Governor R.V. Arlekar, with additional charge of Tamil Nadu, arrived in Chennai, where expectations are high for Vijay to stake his claim for government formation. Analysts anticipate intense negotiations among parties in the coming days as Tamil Nadu navigates towards a new era of coalition politics.
