The Rajya Sabha commenced its session on a tense note as the government and Opposition clashed over the denial of speaking rights to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. The Upper House faced disruptions and accusations of stifling the Leader of Opposition after the Lok Sabha adjourned abruptly.
Amid the uproar, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Opposition’s behavior and emphasized the importance of adhering to Parliamentary norms. He expressed the expectation that all Members of Parliament would respect the rules and traditions of the House, particularly ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled address.
In response to allegations of disrespect towards former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi by BJP members, Mallikarjun Kharge demanded an opportunity for Rahul Gandhi to address the House on national matters. J.P. Nadda, the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, highlighted that discussions on Lok Sabha proceedings were not within the purview of the Upper House.
As heated debates ensued, chaos reigned in the House with Opposition members resorting to slogans. Prior to the session, leaders of the INDIA bloc convened to strategize on challenging the government’s policies.
