After negotiations, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala is likely to join Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan’s cabinet, possibly taking on the Home portfolio. A peace formula by the Congress high command seems to have resolved the unease and discussions.
Saturday saw political consultations at Chennithala’s residence, with senior Congress leaders, including AICC observer Deepa Dasmunshi, engaging in talks. Subsequently, Satheesan met with Chennithala and later with Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal for further discussions.
The discussions at Venugopal’s residence seemed to break the deadlock following Satheesan’s victory, bringing a positive shift in the situation. Venugopal then headed to Chennithala’s residence, indicating progress in the compromise.
With a visible change in mood post-meeting, both leaders appeared united, emphasizing consultation and unity within the party. Chennithala expressed his commitment to the Congress, opting for reconciliation.
The focus now shifts to finalizing ministerial appointments in the new United Democratic Front (UDF) government, with several names being considered for inclusion. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is also narrowing down its list for cabinet positions.
The swearing-in of Satheesan as Kerala’s 13th Chief Minister, along with his cabinet, is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at the Central Stadium, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administering the oath of office. The Left opposition has confirmed its attendance at the ceremony.
