Hollywood star Rami Malek had long desired to work with filmmaker Ira Sachs. Malek, known for his Oscar-winning role as Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ initially hesitated when offered a part in Sachs’ upcoming film ‘The Man I Love.’ The movie centers on a New York theater artist navigating life, love, and artistry post an AIDS diagnosis.
Malek expressed his initial reservations, stating, “When I read the script, I said, ‘I can’t do this. There’s too many similarities. It could be problematic.'” However, drawing inspiration from Freddie Mercury, he confronted his fears, recognizing the need to address them. Malek acknowledged Sachs’ distinctive filmmaking style, which encouraged him to take on the challenging role.
Despite his concerns, Malek trusted Sachs’ vision and his ability to guide him through the film. He embraced the opportunity to delve into the character of Jimmy in ‘The Man I Love,’ a role that required him to sing on camera once again. Malek found the experience different from portraying the iconic Queen frontman, offering a unique artistic challenge.
