Reviving Kolkata as a major urban and economic hub is crucial for developing a high-growth network of cities in eastern India, according to Sanjeev Sanyal, a Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. Sanyal highlighted the significance of a developed eastern India and Bengal in achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat, with Kolkata remaining a pivotal urban center in the region.
Sanyal emphasized the need for a network of rapidly growing urban centers across eastern India, pointing out that cities like Patna, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar also need to evolve as growth hubs. However, he underscored that Kolkata’s revitalization is essential for driving economic growth in the region, considering it as the primary hub.
Investing in Kolkata’s urban ecosystem is crucial, Sanyal noted, mentioning the necessity for various measures to reignite the city’s growth trajectory. He stressed the importance of redevelopment initiatives and changes in industrial policies to better support business and investments in the region.
Highlighting Bengal’s historical trade and entrepreneurial legacy, Sanyal called for a revival of the state’s business culture. He emphasized the need to rekindle the spirit of innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurship that has been intrinsic to Bengali heritage, stating that a developed Bengal would significantly contribute to the broader goal of a developed India.
