The RG Kar rape and murder case has been moved to a new bench at the Calcutta High Court. Chief Justice Sujoy Paul announced that the division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh will now handle the case. The victim’s family has requested a CBI investigation into the incident that occurred on August 9, 2024.

The victim’s family has also sought permission from the High Court to visit the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has applied for capital punishment for the convicted accused, Sanjay Roy, who was initially sentenced to life imprisonment.

Sanjay Roy, the accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, has appealed to the High Court, claiming innocence. The Chief Justice’s bench stated that all related petitions, including the victim’s family plea to visit the crime scene, will now be handled by the new division bench.

The case was previously heard by different benches at the Calcutta High Court. Following a recusal by the division bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha on May 12, a new division bench was formed to expedite the proceedings. Lawyers representing the victim’s family are expected to request an urgent hearing before the new bench on Monday.
