They expressed their excitement about being part of TIFFNZ and highlighted the festival’s role in promoting varied stories.
Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal will be the key figures at the launch event, which will feature a special screening of their debut production, “Girls Will Be Girls,” a renowned coming-of-age drama directed by Shuchi Talati. The film, set in a Himalayan boarding school, revolves around a teenager’s romantic journey, her awakening to sexuality, and her complex relationship with her mother.
The couple shared their enthusiasm for introducing Indian cinema to New Zealand in a structured and celebratory manner. They look forward to engaging with the audience and supporting this new venture. TIFFNZ, scheduled to premiere in October 2026, signifies a significant milestone as New Zealand’s premier Indian film festival, initiated by Petrina D’Rozario to enhance creative connections between the two nations.
The festival is designed as a four-day extravaganza across Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, featuring screenings, workshops, cultural events, and industry dialogues to unite filmmakers and viewers from India and New Zealand. The inaugural edition aims to present about 30 films, showcasing the diversity and global appeal of Indian cinema while amplifying South Asian voices in Aotearoa.
