India’s middle-order batsman Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchand Singh, has passed away after fighting stage-4 liver cancer. The news was confirmed by former spinner Harbhajan Singh in a social media post on Friday. Harbhajan expressed his condolences, acknowledging the challenging time for Rinku and his family during the T20 World Cup.
Rinku’s father was receiving ventilator support at a hospital in Greater Noida and was in critical condition, leading Rinku to return home this week. Despite rejoining the squad in time for the Super Eight clash against Zimbabwe, Rinku did not get a chance to play in the XI, with Sanju Samson being preferred. However, he did participate in the match as a substitute fielder.
Having been a late addition to the World Cup squad, Rinku has struggled to meet expectations, scoring only 24 runs in five innings so far, including a duck against South Africa. Following their victory over Zimbabwe, the Indian team is now heading to Kolkata for the crucial Super 8 match against the West Indies, which will essentially serve as a quarterfinal.
