Tennis icon Roger Federer is set to make a highly anticipated comeback to the U.S. Open after a seven-year absence. Organizers have revealed that Federer will headline a special exhibition event in New York titled “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” on August 25. The Swiss legend, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, will revisit the tournament where he enjoyed many career-defining moments.
Federer, who retired from tennis in 2022 after a remarkable 24-year career, holds the record for winning five consecutive U.S. Open men’s singles titles. His presence at the event is expected to be a highlight of this year’s program. Following the announcement, Federer expressed his deep connection to the New York Major, emphasizing the significance of the US Open in his career and the special place Arthur Ashe Stadium holds in his heart.
Accompanying Federer at the event will be other American tennis greats, including former U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick, eight-time major winner Andre Agassi, and seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe. This return to New York follows Federer’s final attempt at the U.S. Open title in 2021, where he was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. Recently, he was also named as part of the 2024 International Tennis Hall of Fame Class.
Having clinched 20 Grand Slam titles and a total of 103 tour titles, Federer concluded his illustrious career at the Laver Cup in London in 2022. Notably, he remains the sole male player to have achieved five consecutive U.S. Open titles from 2004 to 2008.
