Acclaimed composer Salim Merchant shared insights on singer and composer Arijit Singh’s decision to retire from playback singing. In an interview, Salim mentioned that he is not surprised by Arijit’s choice, noting a trend of industry professionals shifting away from film music. Salim himself has refrained from composing for movies for the past six years, finding more fulfillment in other music avenues.
When asked about Arijit’s announcement, Salim expressed no astonishment, stating that such transitions are inevitable for many in the industry. Despite focusing on independent music, Salim highlighted that unlike Arijit, most artists have not publicly declared their departure from film music. He expressed confidence in Arijit’s future musical endeavors, emphasizing that while playback singing is a small part of the music landscape, Arijit is likely to venture into independent music projects.
Salim also noted a decline in music-centric films being produced currently, underscoring the evolving dynamics of the music industry and artists’ creative pursuits.
