A tragic road accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district resulted in the death of a young schoolgirl and left numerous children seriously injured. The incident took place near the Purna River in the Bhainsdehi police station area, approximately 60 km from the district headquarters.
A school van carrying young students collided head-on with another vehicle, causing the van to overturn violently, transforming a routine school journey into a horrifying scene. Harshita Patankar, a Class 3 student, lost her life in the accident.
Out of the 15 schoolchildren on board the van, 11 sustained injuries, with five of them in critical condition. Local residents promptly responded, assisting in rescuing the trapped children, who were initially taken to the Community Health Centre in Bhainsdehi for immediate medical care.
The most severely injured were subsequently moved to the district hospital in Betul for advanced treatment. The van driver, Sonu Patankar, also suffered injuries in the collision. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage from the impact.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene with debris strewn along the road near the riverbank. Following the crash, the driver of the other vehicle and a passenger fled the scene. Authorities have filed a case and launched a search operation to apprehend the absconding driver.
Police are conducting an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, considering factors such as speeding, reckless driving, negligence, and unsafe overtaking. Road safety concerns persist nationwide, highlighting deficiencies in enforcement and adherence to basic road rules.
Experts emphasize that issues like over-speeding, reckless driving, unsafe overtaking, and poorly maintained vehicles are significant factors contributing to accidents. Incidents involving school vehicles have prompted calls for stricter monitoring, safer transportation routes, and accountability for offenders.
