Hollywood filmmaker Sean Baker and actress Michelle Yeoh have teamed up for a new project set to debut at the Berlin Film Festival. The film, titled ‘Sandiwara,’ signifies Baker’s return to his iPhone-shooting style and is described as an “immersive cinematic experience” by ‘Variety.’
‘Sandiwara’ is a collaboration with the London-based fashion house Self-Portrait, marking the inaugural film from Self-Portrait’s Residency program. This program, launched last year, aims to invite creatives from various fields to design using their unique styles within the brand’s framework.
According to ‘Variety,’ Yeoh plays five distinct characters in the film, which is situated in a Malaysian night market. The storyline transcends fashion, delving into Malaysian culture through unique character narratives that explore facets rarely depicted.
The film derives its name from the Malay term for “drama, theatrical performance, or play” and was filmed in Penang. It will have a special screening at the Berlin Film Festival on February 13, with a subsequent discussion between the director and actor. Baker will also present Yeoh with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement at the festival’s opening ceremony on February 12.
