Security measures have been increased along certain parts of Tripura’s international borders due to reports of cadres from two Bangladesh-based armed groups, the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), moving in the area. The District Magistrate of Gomati district in southern Tripura issued a notification based on reliable inputs from the Border Security Force (BSF) about the potential movement of militants from these groups and the risk of infiltration by Bangladesh nationals, Rohingyas, and members of militant organizations across the border to engage in criminal activities.
In response to the reports from the BSF, a night curfew has been imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in specific border areas under the Karbook Sub-Division of Gomati district. The curfew, effective from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until February 28, aims to maintain peace and prevent anti-national elements and activities that threaten public safety and security.
The notification prohibits individuals, except police personnel, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and BSF personnel on duty, from carrying weapons within the designated areas. Exemptions from the restrictions include police, security personnel, and government officials within 300 meters of the international border. Tripura’s vulnerability to smuggling and cross-border crimes is heightened by its 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, surrounded on three sides by the neighboring country, particularly in Gomati and Dhalai districts bordering the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of southeast Bangladesh.
