In a significant administrative reshuffle within the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, A. Amalraj, a senior IPS officer, has been named the new Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Police, replacing Abin Dinesh Modak. This move is part of a broader effort by the new administration to reorganize key positions across departments post the change in government.
As per an order from the Tamil Nadu government, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) A. Amalraj has been designated as the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police, a crucial and high-profile policing role in the state. Meanwhile, Modak, the outgoing Chennai Police Commissioner, has been reassigned as ADGP, Crime Branch–Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), taking over from T.S. Anbu.
Both Amalraj and Modak are well-known figures in Chennai’s law enforcement setup and have previously served as Commissioner of Tambaram City Police, a major urban police commissionerate in Tamil Nadu. Their extensive experience in metropolitan policing, law enforcement, crime prevention, and administrative duties is expected to be beneficial in their new roles.
A seasoned IPS officer from the 1996 batch, Amalraj has held various significant positions in the Tamil Nadu Police establishment. With a background in senior police and enforcement roles, he has garnered expertise across different departments. This appointment comes amidst a series of administrative changes in Tamil Nadu following the formation of the new government under Chief Minister Vijay, who took office on May 10 after his party emerged as the largest in the 2026 Assembly elections.
