Sandhya Achaiah, the wife of senior IPS officer Annalamada Sunil Achaiah, aged 51, tragically lost her life in a wild elephant attack at her coffee estate in Konanakatte village near Thithimathi in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. The incident occurred on Friday morning. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reached out to the grieving officer, offering his condolences and support during this difficult time.
The Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in an official statement, assuring the family of his solidarity. He also prayed for strength for Sunil Achaiah and the rest of the family as they deal with the loss. Additionally, he directed officials to take necessary steps to prevent human-elephant conflicts in the area.
Reports indicate that Sandhya Achaiah was inspecting work at the coffee plantation with her estate manager and driver when a wild elephant suddenly attacked them. While the staff accompanying her sustained minor injuries and managed to escape, Sandhya Achaiah suffered severe injuries in the attack. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in Gonikoppal but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries during transit.
Forest Department and police officials visited the scene to investigate, and a case has been filed in connection with the incident. The estate’s proximity to the Nagarhole wildlife sanctuary underscores the importance of implementing robust preventive measures to deter wild animals from entering human settlements.
Human-elephant conflicts pose a significant conservation and safety challenge in Karnataka, especially in regions like Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and parts of Mysuru. Despite efforts such as elephant-proof trenches, solar fencing, and habitat restoration programs, the state continues to grapple with the issue due to habitat fragmentation and increased human presence in elephant territories.
