Seychelles President Patrick Herminie highlighted the significance of security cooperation between Seychelles and India in the Indian Ocean. He expressed mutual commitment to combat piracy, drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and cross-border crime during discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders reaffirmed their partnership based on shared geography, history, and a vision for a stable and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
President Herminie praised India’s support in implementing the Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth, and Security through Enhanced Linkages adopted by Seychelles. He described the development partnership as a crucial aspect of the India-Seychelles relationship, emphasizing the deepening collaboration across various sectors. Both nations have finalized agreements covering areas such as foreign service, digital banking, health, agriculture, sea flooring, extradition, space exploration, and the construction of a new national hospital in Seychelles.
Acknowledging India’s assistance in maritime surveillance, hydrography, and defense capacity building, President Herminie underlined the importance of security in the Indian Ocean region. He mentioned India’s support in refurbishing the PS Zoroaster and providing fast attack vessels to the Seychelles Coast Guard. The announcement of a Special Economic Package worth $175 million from India, comprising a line of credit and grant assistance, was also a key highlight of the discussions.
The talks between President Herminie and PM Modi laid a solid foundation for future bilateral cooperation, with a focus on accelerating joint commitments. Notable achievements include the inauguration of the Professional and Technical Education Centre, aimed at enhancing vocational training for Seychellois youth. The leaders also inaugurated solar water pumping systems under the International Solar Alliance, showcasing India’s backing for Seychelles’ transition to renewable energy.
President Herminie bestowed the title ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ upon PM Modi in recognition of his leadership in sustainability, the blue economy, and ocean governance. This honor symbolizes Seychelles’ deep respect for international partners who contribute significantly to shared values and aspirations, particularly in advancing ocean-related initiatives.
