Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor supported the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) movement, dismissing claims of it being a Pakistani conspiracy as oversimplified. Tharoor highlighted that most of the party’s followers were Indian, emphasizing the genuine public sentiment it reflected among the youth.
Tharoor, in a post on X, emphasized the importance of democracy allowing for satirical and dissenting voices, even if provocative. He stressed that democracy’s strength lies in providing platforms for public sentiment and grievances to be expressed.
The CJP, a satirical political movement founded by Abhijeet Dipke, gained attention recently. Tharoor noted that such movements often act as democratic channels for frustration and discontent, tapping into significant national sentiments among the youth.
Tharoor cautioned both the government and the opposition against disregarding or suppressing the underlying discontent among young Indians. He likened such expressions to pressure valves in a democratic system, necessary for releasing steam and preventing chaos.
The movement garnered momentum following controversy around remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, which Dipke said inspired the CJP idea. The CJI clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and aimed at individuals with fake degrees.
Within a week of its launch, the CJP amassed over one crore followers on Instagram before its account was suspended amid the ensuing debate.
