Tensions have risen between India and Bangladesh due to attacks on Hindu minorities and recent incidents targeting Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. Bangladesh is preparing for elections on February 12 amidst a deteriorating security situation and growing political party conflicts. Hasina remains optimistic about the resilience of the bilateral relationship and believes it will strengthen once Bangladeshis can freely elect their government.
India has expressed deep concern over ongoing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists. The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the killing of a Hindu youth in Mymensingh and urged for the perpetrators to face justice. India also criticized the continuous hostility towards minorities in Bangladesh and rejected any false anti-India narratives being circulated in the country.
The Indian government has summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to address security concerns in Bangladesh, particularly around Indian missions in Dhaka. India emphasized the need for the safety of its missions and posts in Bangladesh and called for action against extremist elements creating security threats. India highlighted over 2,900 documented incidents of violence against minorities during the interim government’s tenure, stressing the seriousness of these issues.
