The recent Satara Zilla Parishad (ZP) elections in Maharashtra have exposed internal discord within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, turning a political event into a chaotic scene of violence. Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) criticized the elections, likening them to a dark comedy drama with physical altercations among ministers who are supposed allies in the government.

Shiv Sena Minister Shambhuraj Desai was allegedly roughed up by police, reportedly acting on orders from a rival faction within the alliance. The Thackeray camp accused BJP Ministers Shivendraraje and Jaykumar Gore of orchestrating tactics like defections, voter suppression, and police intimidation to secure the ZP presidency.

The editorial highlighted instances of alleged malpractice, including inducing defections, preventing some members from voting, and using plainclothes police to create a tense atmosphere. The situation escalated when Desai, the grandson of Balasaheb Desai, was dragged away by police, leading to cries of “Democracy has been murdered!” from him and Deputy Chief Minister Shinde.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the political environment in Satara and Maharashtra, with the Shiv Sena lamenting the shift from a disciplined and cultural region to one marked by hooliganism and corrupt power dynamics. The editorial criticized the use of police for political ends and highlighted the erosion of democratic values in the region.
