Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi stressed the importance of constituency delimitation for ensuring effective representation and development. She expressed concerns about avoiding any unfair political advantages or partisan influences in this process. Chaturvedi, a former Rajya Sabha member, highlighted the challenges faced by Members of Parliament due to the current constituency setup, impacting their ability to focus on development.
The leader noted the repeated delays in undertaking delimitation and called for a fair and unbiased approach to the process. She emphasized the necessity of conducting delimitation without favoring any political party or agenda. The issue of delimitation has gained significance as the freeze on readjusting Lok Sabha and state assembly seats based on 1971 Census data is set to end post the 2026 Census.
With the commencement of the Census on April 1, 2026, updated population figures are expected by 2027, triggering the need for delimitation as per the law. The upcoming delimitation process is crucial for the implementation of the Women’s Reservation law, which mandates a 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies. Chaturvedi has consistently supported this legislation, emphasizing the importance of its timely execution rather than a mere commitment.
Discussions within the government have explored options to expedite certain aspects of the delimitation process, including the possibility of amendments or a special session of Parliament. The completion of delimitation following the upcoming Census is pivotal for the effective implementation of legislative measures such as the Women’s Reservation law.
