With the Shooting League of India (SLI) planning to introduce a franchise-based, mixed-team format to the sport, Indian rifle shooter Akhil Sheoran, a gold medallist at the 2022 Asian Games, believes this initiative could revolutionize the experience of shooting for both athletes and fans. Sheoran views the league as a potential game-changer for Indian rifle shooting, which is currently at its peak in terms of competitiveness.
Sheoran expressed optimism about the league’s ability to enhance the connection between athletes and Indian sports enthusiasts, akin to the impact of other successful sports leagues. He highlighted the opportunity for fans to follow a structured schedule, watch performances, grasp the sport better, and extend their support to the shooters.
At the 2025-26 National Championships, where Sheoran clinched a bronze in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions final, he shared his excitement for the upcoming Asian Rifle/Pistol Championships in New Delhi from February 2-14, 2026. The league’s mixed-team format, a prominent feature, intrigues Sheoran, who anticipates a fresh level of excitement through the team-oriented structure, which differs from the usual individual focus in shooting.
Sheoran emphasized the unique dynamics of the mixed-team format, citing the specific roles and collaborative energy it brings, challenging shooters to adapt while maintaining their core routines. He also noted that the league seamlessly integrates into the competitive landscape that has propelled Indian shooting to unprecedented heights, attributing the sport’s rising standards to the depth of talent within the country.
Reflecting on the intense competition in Indian rifle shooting, Sheoran acknowledged the elevated benchmarks set by performances at global events like the Olympics, World Championships, and Asian Games. He emphasized the necessity for continuous mental, physical, and technical improvements in response to the increasingly competitive environment within the sport.
The Shooting League of India holds personal significance for Sheoran, symbolizing his resilient comeback following injury setbacks that hindered his participation in the Paris Olympics. Despite the challenges, Sheoran redirected his focus towards the LA 2028 cycle, committing to comprehensive enhancements across all aspects of his performance to validate his capabilities in the current season.
Sheoran views the league not only as a platform for personal growth but also as a valuable mentorship opportunity, where experienced athletes can guide and inspire younger shooters selected by franchises across various skill levels. Additionally, he highlighted the league’s strategic timing in February, aligning with his preparations for the 2026 Asian Games, providing crucial high-pressure match scenarios early in the year to enhance his competitive readiness for major international events.
