India’s Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill has shared his thoughts on being left out of the T20 World Cup squad, expressing his respect for the selectors’ decision and his belief in destiny. Gill, who had been the vice-captain of the T20I team, was omitted from the 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup, with Axar Patel appointed as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy.
Speaking at a press conference before the first ODI against New Zealand, Gill stated, “I believe that I am where I am meant to be in life. No one can alter what is destined for me. While I aspire to play in World Cups and contribute to my team’s victories, I accept the selectors’ verdict. I wish the T20 team success and hope they triumph in the World Cup.”
Gill was introduced into the T20I setup ahead of last year’s Asia Cup to provide stability to the batting order alongside a more aggressive lineup. However, the experiment did not yield the desired outcomes, leading to India struggling to maintain their usual attacking style. Consequently, the selectors decided to end the Gill experiment before the T20 World Cup, opting to reinstate Sanju Samson as the opener.
As India prepares to face New Zealand in a series of three ODIs followed by five T20Is, Gill will resume his leadership role. These matches will serve as crucial preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup.
