Six individuals tragically lost their lives, and one person sustained severe injuries due to suffocation in an under-construction septic tank in Kalahandi district, Odisha. The deceased include Nimain Charan Pal, his son Akash Pal, Adal Majhi, Manoranjan Hati, Baikuntha Jal, and Chhand Jal. The incident occurred during construction work at Nimain Charan’s residence in Gaud Karlakhunta village.
Construction was ongoing at the site with a mason and laborers from the village and nearby areas when the accident happened. Nimain fell into the tank while inspecting the work, prompting his son Akash to enter for a rescue attempt, leading to both being trapped. Four other workers also entered in a bid to save them but succumbed due to suspected toxic gas inside the tank.
Following the tragedy, all victims were taken to a nearby Community Health Centre, where they were pronounced dead. Another worker, Pankaj Bhoi from Hatikhoj village, sustained critical injuries and was transferred to the District Headquarters Hospital for advanced care. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased person’s family.
